My Story - From sales zero to hero (in 30 days)

Insanity [in-san-i-tee]: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”


Do you want to be insane? Of course not but funny enough, most people are. 


Even me, I’m insane.*


As the new sales rep at a fast growing tech company, I’m already a few dials away from joining the looney bin. Thought it would be smooth sailing but nothing has been working. 


Corporate Bro vids and sales memes I’ve been laughing at are now my reality. 





My manager asks, “what’s your meeting goal for this week?” and I respond “eight!”


This is what the first few days look like…

  • Monday - 72 dials, 183 emails, zero meetings 
  • Tuesday - 34 dials, 108 emails, zero meetings (feeling the hangover)
  • Wednesday - 81 dials, 90 emails, zero meetings


FAST FORWARD 1,000 calls, 10,000 emails, and two meetings later. 



After all that work just TWO MEETINGS?!?! What the f$%k is going on? 


And for the cherry on top, I’m the bottom of the leaderboard. My path to promotion is narrow, I’m living off my base pay and am barely scraping by. 


If this was like Pixar’s “Inside Out” then only pain and anxiety would occupy my mind. 



I ask myself…am I on the chopping block? Where did I go wrong? 


After self pity, existential dread, and the 8 stages of grief, I finally ask myself…


Drum roll please.


What can I do differently? 


I dial, email, dial, email, dial, email, with TERRIBLE results. Endless hangups, voicemails, no responses, mean responses, no shows. The usual. 


I’m putting in the work but not getting meetings. And these meetings are everything. 


Meetings = 4 P’s (pipeline, paychecks, promotions, praise)


I then remember a famous Einstein quote, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”

 

Well phone calls and emails aren’t working, that’s for sure. In all honesty, I’m not surprised because I HATE random calls and emails too.


So how do I like to communicate? Facetime and Snapchat aka VIDEO.


Ok, new strategy, it’s time to send up some video messages. 


FAST FORWARD 600 video messages, TWO promotions, and one of the biggest deals in company history later.
